The Senior Trip is special.
Like previous school trips, the Senior Trip is a valued and vital part of the Everest experience. The Senior Trip is also different than earlier study trips, reflecting the unique needs and experiences of our soon-to-be graduates. By late May, seniors have made plans for college and the time until graduation is counted in days, not weeks or months. The needs of seniors shift from preparing for the future to deepening their understanding and appreciation of the present.
For these reasons, the Senior Trip has two main purposes:
1. Deepening Academic Understanding - The Senior Trip is a mega field trip designed to build on the college-level curriculum they have experienced this year.
a. AP English Literature: Attending a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, to experience live theater and connect to the curriculum.
b. AP Government: Visiting Shasta Dam, connecting the history of the site with the lessons about federalism and bureaucracy.
c. AP Environmental Science: Experiencing Willow Witt Ranch, a sustainable farm whose projects touch on many ideas from the course, including wetland restoration, sustainable forestry, biodynamic farming, and alternative energy.
For the last two years, these experiences have generated many “a-ha moments” for our seniors, as the connection between a project or content from a playlist takes on new life in an authentic context. For many students, the Senior Trip is also the first time they have been out of the state, attended a formal play, or visited a working farm; these are powerful moments for our seniors to share!
2. Deepening Community Connections - Near the end of senior year, students realize that they will be leaving the Everest community soon to take on new challenges. The Senior Trip is the final time where the entire class, along with teachers and parents, will share in a meaningful off-campus school experience.
Our activities also give opportunities for students to appreciate and strengthen these bonds, even as they imagine themselves in their new communities, such as:
1. Bonding Time - Mentor Group special shared dinner time, bonding during the drive up and back from Ashland.
2. Responsibility and Choice - Helping plan car and rooming groups; Choosing their dining groups and restaurant for the night of the play.
3. Preparing for the Future - Imagining themselves as freshman orienting to their new campus as they engage in a scavenger hunt at Southern Oregon University, practicing their independence and self-advocacy skills with the support of their current community as they prepare for new challenges ahead.
The Senior Trip is over two months away, but planning is already in high gear. Tickets are bought, tours and rooms are booked. However, we still need to make important decisions about transportation, and we need your feedback to see if this is feasible.
Parents Make This Trip Possible
Every trip, from freshman to senior year, is enabled by generous parents who donate resources, time, or both to help get our students to their destination and back. Without this parent support, these experiences would not be possible. For trips at every grade, parents who drive students often contribute a significant amount of their own resources to be able to take this trip with our students (often $300 or more in gas, lodging, and other costs).
A Senior Trip Bus? We Need Your Input
As with past years, the Senior Trip Faculty and Parent Leads are exploring the possibility of renting a charter bus. We hope that this provides more opportunities for families to support the Senior Trip (even if they cannot drive), as well as providing a safe and efficient means of transport for our students. We will still need 5–10 parent drivers and chaperones, but this option would reduce the number needed greatly. In the past, it has cost around $5000 to rent a bus for the trip. If every family were able to donate an additional $60 towards transportation, we could rent a bus for the Senior Trip. If 30 families were able to donate an additional $170 (about half of what parent drivers usually spend on gas and hotel costs), we could still rent a bus.
Unlike recruiting drivers, we need to make this decision far in advance. If we can support a bus rental, we will need to place a deposit for the bus as soon as possible. If there is interest in this bus option, we will pursue it. We need your input quickly to make this decision.

We would prefer that if you plan to make a donation toward the bus, you do so now, as opposed to waiting until later. If we do not end up soliciting enough interest in the bus option, we will either reimburse your donation or allocate it toward the core trip expenses.
